Human Sense Organ- The Nose

Nose – The Organ of Smell

The nose is one of the important sense organs of the human body. It helps us to detect different smells in our surroundings. The sense of smell is called olfaction. Along with helping us smell, the nose also performs an important function in breathing by allowing air to enter and leave our body.

Our sense of smell helps us recognise objects, identify places, and even detect danger. For example, the smell of smoke can warn us about a fire, and the smell of spoiled food helps us know that it should not be eaten.

The nose also works together with the tongue to help us enjoy the flavour of food. When we eat, both our sense of taste and smell work together to identify different flavours.

The nose contains several important parts that help in breathing and smelling.

1. Nostrils

The nostrils are the two openings present at the front of the nose. They provide a passage for air to enter and leave the body during breathing.

Inside the nostrils, tiny hairs are present that trap dust particles, pollen, and germs. This helps prevent harmful particles from reaching the lungs.

The nostrils also help in filtering the air before it enters the respiratory system.

2. Nasal Cavity

The nasal cavity is a hollow space inside the nose through which air passes.

It performs several important functions:

  • It cleans the air by trapping dust and germs.
  • It warms cold air before it reaches the lungs.
  • It adds moisture to the air, preventing dryness in the respiratory passages.

The walls of the nasal cavity contain tiny blood vessels that help warm the incoming air.

3. Olfactory Receptors

The upper part of the nasal cavity contains special smell-detecting cells called olfactory receptors.

When we breathe in air containing different smell particles, these receptors detect them. They then send signals to the brain through the olfactory nerves.

The brain receives these messages and identifies the smell. This is how we can recognise the smell of flowers, food, perfumes, or smoke.

Humans have millions of olfactory receptor cells that help us detect thousands of different smells.

4. Nasal Mucus

The inner lining of the nose produces a sticky substance called mucus.

Mucus helps by:

  • Trapping dust particles and germs.
  • Keeping the nasal cavity moist.
  • Protecting the respiratory system from harmful substances.

The trapped particles are removed when we sneeze or clean our nose.

Functions of Nose:

Our nose is an amazing organ that works all day and night to keep us healthy and help us explore the world.

First, the nose helps us breathe. Every time you take a breath, air goes into your nose and travels down to your lungs. This brings fresh oxygen into your body, which gives you energy to run, play, and learn.

Second, the nose cleans the air we breathe. The tiny hairs and sticky liquid inside your nose act like a natural filter. They catch dust, dirt, and germs from the air so they cannot get inside your lungs and make you sick.

Third, the nose acts like a natural heater and humidifier. Cold or dry air can hurt your throat and lungs. Your warm nose warms up the air and makes it moist before it goes deeper into your body.

Fourth, the nose gives us our sense of smell. Inside the top part of your nose, there are special receptors that catch tiny scent particles floating in the air. They send quick messages to your brain so you can smell yummy cookies, fresh flowers, or warning smells like smoke.

Finally, the nose helps us taste food. When you eat, smells from your food go into the back of your nose. This works together with your tongue so you can enjoy all the delicious flavours of your favourite meals.

How Do We Sense Smell?

The process of smelling takes place in the following steps:

  1. Smell particles from an object enter the nose while breathing.
  2. These particles reach the olfactory receptors inside the nasal cavity.
  3. The receptors send signals to the brain through nerves.
  4. The brain identifies and recognises the smell.

This entire process happens very quickly, allowing us to identify smells within seconds.

Interesting Facts About the Nose

  • The human nose can detect thousands of different smells.
  • Our sense of smell can create memories. A particular smell can remind us of a person, place, or event.
  • Smell helps us identify flavours because about 80% of what we experience as flavour comes from smell.
  • The nose helps protect our lungs by filtering unwanted particles from the air.

(Nostrils)

(Nasal Cavity)

(Olfactory Receptors)

(Nasal Mucus)

(Functions of Nose)

(Breathing):

(Filtering Air):

(Warming and Moistening Air):

(Sense of Smell):

(Helping in Taste):
