Skin – The Organ of Touch
The skin is the outer covering of the human body. It covers our entire body and acts as a protective layer between our internal organs and the outside environment.
Skin is one of the important sense organs of the human body because it helps us feel different sensations such as touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain.
The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It protects the organs inside our body from injuries, germs, harmful substances, and changes in the surrounding environment. It also helps maintain our body temperature and keeps our body safe and healthy.
Our skin is not just a simple covering; it is a complex organ made up of different layers that perform different functions.

Internal Structure of Skin
The skin is made up of three main layers:
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis
Each layer has a special role in protecting and supporting our body.
1. Epidermis
The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. It is the layer that we can see and touch.
The main function of the epidermis is to protect our body from harmful substances, germs, and injuries. It also prevents too much water from leaving our body.
The epidermis contains a pigment called melanin, which gives colour to our skin. Melanin also helps protect the skin from harmful rays of the Sun.
The outer cells of the epidermis become old and die over time. These dead cells are removed from the skin surface and replaced by new cells.
2. Dermis
The dermis is the middle layer of the skin. It is located below the epidermis and contains many important structures.
The dermis contains:
Nerve Endings
Nerve endings help us feel different sensations such as:
- Touch
- Pressure
- Heat
- Cold
- Pain
For example, when we touch a hot object, the nerve endings in our skin quickly send signals to the brain, helping us remove our hand.
Sweat Glands
Sweat glands produce sweat. Sweating helps cool our body when the temperature rises or when we exercise.
Hair Follicles
Hair follicles are small structures from which hair grows. They help in the growth of hair on different parts of our body.
Blood Vessels
Blood vessels supply oxygen and nutrients to skin cells and help maintain the health of the skin.
3. Hypodermis
The hypodermis is the deepest layer of the skin. It lies below the dermis and connects the skin with muscles and bones.
This layer contains fat cells t
hat perform important functions:
- They store energy.
- They help keep our body warm.
- They act as a cushion and protect the body from shocks and injuries.
Functions of Skin
The skin performs many important functions that help us survive and stay healthy.

1. Protection of the Body
The most important function of skin is to protect our body from the outside environment.
It acts as a protective barrier and prevents:
- Entry of harmful germs and bacteria
- Injuries caused by small cuts and scratches
- Loss of too much water from the body
- Harmful substances from entering the body
For example, when we touch a dirty surface, the skin acts as a barrier and prevents many germs from entering our body.
2. Feeling Sensations
The skin helps us sense the world around us. Tiny nerve endings present in the skin detect different sensations and send messages to the brain.
With the help of skin, we can feel:
- A soft cloth touching our hand
- The warmth of sunlight
- The coldness of ice
- Pain from an injury
This helps us respond quickly and protect ourselves from danger.
3. Maintaining Body Temperature
Skin helps control our body temperature and keeps it nearly constant.
When our body becomes hot, sweat glands produce sweat. As sweat evaporates from the skin surface, it cools our body.
When the weather is cold, the fat layer in the hypodermis helps prevent heat loss and keeps us warm.
4. Removing Waste from the Body
Sweat produced by sweat glands contains water and small amounts of waste substances. By producing sweat, the skin helps remove some waste from the body.
5. Producing Vitamin D
When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it helps our body produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for strong bones and overall health.
How Skin Detects Touch and Sends Signals to the Brain
Our skin helps us feel different sensations such as touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain with the help of special structures called sensory receptors.
These sensory receptors are present in different layers of the skin, especially in the dermis. They continuously collect information from our surroundings and help us understand what we are touching.

Step 1: Touch Stimulates the Skin
When an object touches our skin, the sensory receptors present in the skin detect the change.
For example:
- When we touch a soft cloth, touch receptors detect its softness.
- When we hold an ice cube, temperature receptors detect coldness.
- When we touch a hot object, heat receptors detect high temperature.
Step 2: Sensory Receptors Send Signals
After detecting a sensation, the sensory receptors convert the information into electrical signals.
These signals travel through special nerve cells present in the skin.
Step 3: Nerves Carry Information to the Brain
The signals from the skin travel through nerves from the skin to the brain.
Nerves act like communication pathways that carry messages between the skin and the brain.
Step 4: Brain Understands the Sensation
The brain receives these signals and processes the information. It tells us what we are feeling and helps us respond accordingly.
For example, when we touch a very hot object, the brain quickly understands the danger and sends instructions to our muscles to move our hand away.
Touch Detection Process:
Object touches skin → Sensory receptors detect sensation → Nerves carry signals → Brain receives and understands information → Body responds

(Skin – The Organ of Touch)

(Internal Structure of Skin)
(Epidermis)
(Dermis)
(Hypodermis)
(Epidermis)
(Dermis)
(Nerve Endings)
(Touch)
(Pressure)
(Heat)
(Cold)
(Pain)
(Sweat Glands)
(Hair Follicles)
(Blood Vessels)
(Hypodermis)
(Functions of Skin)

(Protection of the Body)
(Feeling Sensations)
(Maintaining Body Temperature)
(Removing Waste)
5. विटामिन D बनाना (Producing Vitamin D)

(Interesting Facts About Skin)
